I would like to assume we have all seen the movie, ‘Remember the Titans.’ Can you remember the team’s pre-game ritual? What was the purpose of it? For those of you who have not seen the movie, or may not remember, the players created a chant, “We are the Titans, the mighty mighty Titans…” This was accompanied by a “march” that they performed before a game. Throught this, the players created a sense of unity and team cohesion. I believe this fired the team up and allowed them to connect their values before game time.

So, do pre-game rituals work everytime… no. Can they be affective and useful… yes. As a collegiate volleyball player at Indiana Tech, our team implemented several pre-game rituals. These were decided solely by the players, removing coach from the equation. We had somewhat of a “dance party” in between warm-ups. This was our time to bond and get fired up to play. The WARRIORS (our school mascot) were able to relieve pressure through this activity and create togetherness.

We ended the season,17th in the nation for NAIA Women’s Volleyball! Whether or not the pre-game rituals had any impact on our success, I have no idea. However, I can say, the Indiana Tech Warriors were the closest team I have ever been a part of.
